Standard

The makeup contouring trend is all the rage, but wouldn’t you prefer to have the look without the daily routine?

Restoring your youthful contours or augmenting your cheeks has become a very popular treatment. If you’re interested in natural-looking results that can make your makeup contouring routine obsolete, talk to your dermatologist about trying one or more of these treatments.

Replacing Lost Collagen – Face and Jawline

Sculptra Aesthetic

Sculptra Aesthetic is an injectable treatment that gradually stimulates growth of your own collagen!

In the months after your treatment, Sculptra can restore more youthful skin and contours, lifting and creating definition where you may have lost it over the years. On average, three sessions over a few months can last for more than two years – so you can skip all the daily bronzers and highlighters.

Volumizing and the Lifting- Face and Jawline

Soft Tissue Fillers

Soft Tissue Fillers, like RADIESSE Volumizing Filler, Juvéderm, and Restylane provide immediate volume and correction in places like:

  • The deep lines between the nose and mouth, sometimes called “smile lines”
  • Lines framing the mouth, also known as “marionette lines” or “parentheses”
  • Hollow temples
  • Deeper contours or lines under the eyes, also known as the “tear troughs”
  • The lip line, the lips, the chin, and the jowls

Voluma

Voluma, also a soft tissue filler, is a unique injectable gel specifically made for instantly volumizing the cheek area – which can lift the mid and lower face, including the jowls and jawline! A treatment with Voluma can help restore contour and a more youthful profile, and can last for up to two years!img_2123img_2124

Slimming and Defining- Neck and Jawline

Kybella

Kybella is an injectable treatment for contouring and improving the appearance of submental fullness, frequently referred to as ‘the double chin’. Made up of a naturally occurring molecule in the body, this treatment actually aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat for a more defined, younger-looking jawline. img_2127img_2121
BOTOX Cosmetic

During what is called “the Nefertiti Lift” procedure, BOTOX Cosmetic is injected into the vertical bands in the neck, resulting in a more defined jawline, a smoother neck, and prevention of the pull-down that leads to the turkey neck look.

Board certified Dermatologist, Dr. Quenby Erickson, sometimes uses one or more combinations of these treatments to achieve significant, yet natural-looking results.

“It’s like having all the crayons in the box to work with, not just one color,” says Dr. Erickson. “With the availability of these cutting-edge injectables, we can address multiple areas to achieve beautiful contours and lift,”

…without spending all morning in your makeup mirror.

Rejuvenation Through the Generations: The Best Ways to Treat Your Neck For Your Age

Standard

Even dating back to Nefertiti – who was known for her elegant profile – a long, smooth, young-looking neck has been a gold standard symbol of youth and beauty. Contemporary women are now availing themselves to early intervention and corrective, high-tech procedures to tighten, plump, smooth and slim with little or no downtime – and neck treatments are more popular than ever.

Neck Treatment Popularity: Why Now?

Since injectables (fillers and BOTOX) and laser treatments (like Halo and BBL) became popular and accessible, many women found that having facial wrinkles or discoloration was no longer inevitable. But while the facial skin may look beautiful, the untreated neck can reveal years of sun damage, hereditary sagging and drooping, spotty skin and lumpy fat pockets.

The numerous options for non-surgical treatment, paired with the thought of having a wattle or a falling chin is enough to make younger women jump into prevention – and women of many ages to seek correction.

Dr Quenby Erickson, board certified Chicago Dermatologist, gives us her take on which treatments to consider for your age:

What to do in your 20s:

Maintain, Maintain, Maintain

Maintaining the skin in earlier stages will potentially set you up for less correction later. “The benefit of starting young is that you will need less drastic treatments in the future,” says Dr. Erickson.

SPF, Retinol, and the Nefertiti Lift

“Women in their 20s should use an SPF on the neck daily, as well as a gentle retinol product to maintain the quality of the skin” says Dr. Erickson. “The Nefertiti Lift (Botox in the rope-like platysmal cords under the jaw and the chin) can help to keep the neck and jowls from sagging, which is a great preventative technique,”

What to do in your 30s:

Maintain

“Again, if you start when you’re in your 20s or 30s, there’s a chance you’ll need fewer and less-corrective treatments later..”

The Nefertiti Lift

Dr. Erickson goes on to explain that “Most people in their 30s are still in the ‘prevention’ category. Botox in the platysmal bands (Nefertiti Lift) becomes essential to maintain the youthfulness of the neck”

Dr Quenby Erickson injected BOTOX Cosmetic into the platysmal bands to recontour the neck and jawline without surgery.

Light Chemical Peels and Gentle Laser

“Periodic chemical peel treatments, or light laser treatments to tighten the skin can also be great options for people in their 30s”

Kybella

Many people (men and women) who are most troubled by the dreaded double chin are not yet at the midcentury mark. “Some people were born with submental fullness (fat under the jaw). Kybella is a great tool to slim and smooth for anyone who notices a little extra fat,” says Dr. Erickson.

What to do in your 40s:

In the 40s, gravity kicks in, resulting in laxity, sagging, looser skin, and free-falling fat. “The element of correction starts in the 40s” says Dr. Erickson. “By the time you’re 40, you have some sun damage that needs to be reversed.

Laser Treatments and Pelleve

“Since collagen and elastin production slows down as we get older, laser treatments like Halo, MicrolaserPeel and BBL become important to stimulate collagen, improve texture and tone, and improve color. In addition, Pelleve treatments deliver radiofrequency energy into the skin to stimulate new collagen to smooth and tighten.”

The Nefertiti Lift

Those thin and ropey cords under the chin can get stronger and tend to protrude while contracting in the 40s. “This causes a softening of the curve between the neck and the chin – softening into a curve that used to be more like a right angle when you’re younger” Botox can relax this, making the jawline more defined and prevent the cords from becoming even stronger.

The Nefertiti Lift procedure results in a more defined jawline, a smoother neck, and prevention of the 'pull-down' that contributes to turkey neck.

Kybella

While double chins can occur at many ages, they can also come along with age as the skin becomes less taught, sagging sets in, and we naturally gain some fat. Kybella is injected into the subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin) to destroy the fat cells and smooth the area.

Fillers

“If you have horizontal lines, then you want to get a filler sooner than later to prevent them from getting deeper” says Dr. Erickson.

Nectifirm

Nectifirm is a powerful antioxidant and peptide-based treatment cream formulated to address the changes that occur as the skin on your neck ages. My patients love it.” says Dr. Erickson.

What to do in your 50s, 60s, and Beyond:

As skin loses more of its tautness, muscles continue to weaken, and gravity rears its ugly head, “It’s important to tailor treatments to the patient. At this point, the types and frequency of treatments can depend on how much prevention has been done,”

The skin on the neck is so delicate, treatments need to be gentle and numerous to be effective when you haven’t maintained over the years”

Dr Erickson goes on to explain, “ Typically patients in this age group can be candidates for lower neck lifts, but now that we have non-surgical options that can make a significant improvement, we can sometimes stave off the knife. …That being said, surgery won’t correct the skin. For this reason, (whether you’re a candidate for a surgery or not) Botox, Kybella, laser, and filling neck creases are very common treatments for this age group.”

The Nefertiti Lift

Yes, The Nefertiti Lift –again. In the 50’s and throughout the years, the continuous pull-down by these ropey bands gets stronger. Dr. Erickson explains that generally at this age range, “Often prevention has not been done with Botox in the neck – so there is a need for more frequent correction.”

These platysmal bands continue to cause a softening of the curve between the neck and the chin – an area that’s more like a right angle when you’re younger” Botox can relax this, making the jawline more defined and preventing the cords from becoming even stronger over time.

Laser Treatments and Pelleve

As skin loses more of its tautness, treatments like Halo laser and MicrolaserPeel are essential to correct and stimulate new collagen. “Crepey, thin skin becomes more taught and smooth with numerous, gentle treatments,” says Dr. Erickson.

Dr. Erickson goes on to explain that Pelleve treatments are often used to stimulate collagen to firm and help to make skin tighter and more plump.

Fillers

In addition to filling horizontal lines, fillers can be used to boost temples, lift cheeks, and fill the hollows below the mouth. Fillers can also help to uplift and fill jowling-areas, contributing to a smoother and more elegant look.

Kybella

Nectifirm

Nectifirm contains powerful ingredients designed to rejuvenate your neck area by treating it differently than the skin on your face. Continuous use of this product really seems to make a difference in the skin.” Says Dr. Erickson.

“Well, there’s no cookbook” concludes Dr. Erickson. “Everyone is different. Although some women may just start to notice changes in their necks in their 40s and 50s, others may have significant sun damage and need for correction in the 20s and 30s. In fact, more and more women in their 20s and 30s are asking for neck-treatments than ever.”

The Recipe for Correction: Gentle and Frequent

In the non-surgical world, ‘quick-fix’ is a term that goes hand-in-hand with ‘magic wand’.

“That doesn’t mean that we can’t correct skin that’s more advanced in the aging process,’ Dr Erickson explains “It just means there may be more treatments to achieve the desired results. Again, because of the delicate nature of the skin, treatments must be gentle. Just be patient and consistent. You’ll tend to see a great result if you do.”

Why is everyone talking about Kybella? An Interview with Dr. Erickson

Standard
We all know it -and fear it- the presence of fat on the upper neck or under the chin, commonly known as (the dreaded) double-chin. Pockets of fat can be genetic, and can form despite weight or healthy eating. This contributes to an older and heavier overall look, and nobody wants that!
Recently FDA-approved Kybella is a new way to treat it. Made up of a naturally-occurring molecule, the treatment consists of a series of small injections to destroy the fat cells and tighten the neck.
Dr. Quenby Erickson demonstrates the Kybella injection for the sub-mental fat - aka the dreaded double-chin.

Dr. Quenby Erickson demonstrates the Kybella injection for the sub-mental fat – aka the dreaded double-chin.

Why is everyone talking about Kybella?
It’s a really exciting time for the neck,” says Dr. Quenby Erickson, board-certified dermatologist. “Over the last 20 years, we’ve gotten really great at nonsurgical rejuvenation of the face… But you can always tell when a face has been treated and a neck hasn’t. People want to keep the neck looking as just good as the face, and with the new advances in technology we can – without surgery.”
What makes Kybella unique?
“We’ve never had a nonsurgical treatment for the sub-mental fat -aka double chin- before. It’s exciting because it’s an injectable, whereas before we had to resort to surgery.  It’s a fantastic alternative to liposuction and neck lift surgery.”
Who is Kybella good for?

“Kybella can be great for anyone with sub-mental fullness who wants to improve the appearance of their jawline,” says Dr. Erickson. “It can result in a more youthful, slimmed-out look.”

Dr. Erickson explains that women can start to notice age-related changes in their neck as early as the 20’s and 30’s. These patients already tend to love the ever-popular Nefertiti Lift (Botox in the neck). “But they might be bothered by a little extra fat,” says Dr Erickson. “Now there’s an injectable for that, too.”
Dr. Erickson explains that men of various ages can benefit from Kybella “In fact, men love the result of a slimmer, more defined jawline.”
But if the fat is dissolved (essentially ’emptied out’) from a double chin, would that cause any loose skin?
“In general, we’re not appreciating a loose skin issue with Kybella. Of course, in the case that a patient comes in with predominantly more of a loose skin issue, we’d need to do some tightening,” says Dr. Erickson.
“But with Kybella, we’re actually seeing that there seems to be a retraction of the skin, that there is some neocollagenisis (new collagen formation). In many cases, the skin gets tighter.”
Double chins of the world beware!

Does Coolsculpting Work? An interview with Dr. Erickson

Standard

It’s a burning question that many who are considering the Coolsculpting procedure have: “Does Coolsculpting work?

Also known as cryo- lipolysis, Coolsculpting is a non-surgical procedure that freezes fat cells. The surrounding tissue stays healthy, and the fat cells (now damaged from being frozen during the procedure) slowly die off, leaving your body newly-contoured.

But does it really work?

“Of course it works,” says Dr. Quenby Erickson, board-certified dermatologist. “You can spend hours in the gym and lose weight, only to see those stubborn trouble areas stick around.”

Recalling her own personal experience with Coolsculpting, Dr Erickson noted that no matter how big or small she had gotten in the past, her inner thighs still always rubbed together. “That is, until Coolsculpting,” she says, smiling. “Now I feel better in my clothes, in dresses, shorts, even while I’m working out.”

So, what if you have multiple pesky pockets of fat? Where do you start?
“It’s that one trouble area; no matter how hard you work, that’s always a disappointment… That’s often the first area you’d treat with coolsculpting.”

Why? “Because it really makes you realize the difference. You see the changes,” says Dr. Erickson. “Our patients love it. I think it really makes them feel good. I think for many people, it makes them feel better in (and out!) of their clothes.”

…And really, who wouldn’t want that?

Ask Dr Erickson: Q & A

Standard

We’ve received some really good skin-related questions from our patients and friends, and thought we’d like to share Dr. Quenby Erickson’s comments and thoughts in response.

Here’s a great summer-related question from one of our fantastic clients:

Q: “What sunscreen products are safe to use on a baby?”

A: Gentle products with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide (physical sunscreen elements which reflect and scatter UVA/UVB). Products that contain these ingredients include SkinMedica Daily Physical Defense, Neutrogena PureScreen, and Obagi Nu-Derm Physical UV Block (which contains a whopping 18.5% zinc oxide!)”.

Dr Erickson cautions parents though, adding that “Direct and prolonged sun exposure is always to be avoided, and in infants especially. Their skin is much more delicate. Some people may have the misguided thought that if the baby has sun block on, that being out in direct sun is “OK”. It’s very important to understand that these sunscreen products are only a recommendation to add to the rest of the safe sun practices: seek shade, cover anything you can with UPF clothing, and avoid the mid day hours when the sun is hottest.” (This means you too, adults!)

So, no matter what your age, play it safe out there this summer!
